Your Support Enabled Riley to Bring South Africa to the World Stage

After months of preparation, fundraising, robot testing, problem-solving and teamwork, Riley and the Smooth Sailors travelled to South Korea to represent South Africa at the FIRST LEGO League International Competition.

It was a journey filled with firsts. A first international competition. A first visit to Asia. New food, new traditions, new friendships and the unforgettable experience of competing alongside talented young innovators from around the world.

Now that Riley is home, she would like to share what the experience meant to her.

The Journey Begins

Leaving South Africa was the moment everything became real.

The fundraising campaign, the late practices, the preparation and the months of hard work had all led to this. The team was finally on its way to South Korea, carrying their robot, their ideas and the South African flag with them.

There was excitement, nervous energy and plenty of anticipation. Riley was travelling further from home than ever before, heading towards an experience none of them could fully imagine yet.

Every donation had helped turn a distant goal into a boarding pass.

Riley Leaves South Africa

A whole new world

Landing in South Korea brought a completely new world into view.

The language, signs, sounds, surroundings and pace of life were all unfamiliar. It was exciting, sometimes overwhelming and completely unforgettable.

Before the competition had even started, Riley was already learning to adapt, observe and step confidently into a new environment.

This was no longer only about preparing for a robot game. It was about discovering a new country, connecting with people from different backgrounds and seeing how much there is to learn beyond the classroom.

Experiencing South Korea

One of the most memorable parts of the trip was the opportunity to experience South Korean culture firsthand.

Riley had the chance to wear a traditional hanbok and experience the beautiful colours, details and history behind this special clothing. It was a moment that allowed her to connect with Korean culture in a way that no textbook or video could recreate.

Food was another major highlight.

There were unfamiliar flavours, new dishes and plenty of moments spent deciding what to try next. Riley’s favourite was hot pot, where vegetables and meat are cooked at the table in a bubbling, spicy broth.

Some dishes became immediate favourites, while others required a little more courage, but every meal became part of the adventure.

These cultural experiences gave Riley the opportunity to be curious in a completely different way. She was not only representing her own country, but learning to appreciate the traditions, everyday life and hospitality of another.

Then it was time to compete.

Walking into an international FIRST LEGO League event was an experience unlike any other. The venue was filled with teams from around the world, each arriving with their own robot, innovation project, story and approach to the UNEARTHED challenge.

For Riley and the Smooth Sailors, this was the moment to put months of preparation into action.

The team took part in robot games, presented their innovation project, responded to questions and demonstrated the teamwork, resilience and creativity that had carried them all the way from South Africa.

There were moments of pressure, unexpected challenges and problems that had to be solved quickly. Not every run went exactly according to plan, but the team continued to adapt, encourage one another and keep going.

Beyond the scores, Riley met young people who shared her curiosity and passion for innovation. Different languages and countries did not stop them from connecting over robots, ideas and the excitement of solving difficult problems together.

new friends from around the world

The competition brought together young innovators from countries across the world.

Riley formed friendships with participants from places such as New Zealand and the United Kingdom, discovering that although the teams came from very different backgrounds, they shared a common passion for creativity, technology and problem-solving.

Each team approached the UNEARTHED theme differently. Seeing their robots, projects and ideas gave Riley a glimpse into the many ways people can think about the same challenge.

The competition was not only about finding out which robot could score the most points. It was also about learning from one another, sharing ideas and discovering what becomes possible when young minds are given the opportunity to innovate.

Riley competition day

an extraordinary day

Riley final competition Day

The final day brought one last robot game, a surprise mission and the anticipation of the closing ceremony.

By that point, the Smooth Sailors had already achieved something remarkable. They had travelled across the world, represented South Africa with pride and competed alongside some of the strongest young robotics teams internationally.

But there was still one final surprise waiting for them.

The Smooth Sailors finished:

Third Place Overall, Second Place for Core Values!

These results were an extraordinary recognition of the team’s technical ability, collaboration, determination and character.

Core Values sit at the heart of FIRST LEGO League. They recognise how teams work together, include others, learn from setbacks and approach challenges with respect and integrity.

Finishing second in this category reflected something that everyone who has followed Riley’s journey has seen from the beginning.

This team did not only compete well. They represented South Africa with curiosity, kindness and an incredible sense of teamwork.

The journey continues

Riley returned home with more than medals and unforgettable memories.

The journey gave her greater confidence, new friendships and a much bigger understanding of what is possible. It also inspired her to think about how she could create similar opportunities for other young people.

Riley now hopes to start her own FIRST LEGO League team and encourage more children to discover STEAM, robotics and innovation.

That may be one of the most meaningful outcomes of the entire journey.

The opportunity you helped give one young innovator has inspired her to open the door for others.

Thank you for helping her get there

None of this would have been possible without the people who believed in Riley and supported her campaign.

Your donation helped cover the real costs of reaching South Korea, but its impact went far beyond travel and competition expenses.

You helped Riley discover that her hard work could carry her across the world. You showed her that people believed in her potential. You gave her an experience that will continue to shape her confidence, curiosity and ambitions for years to come.

From the moment she left South Africa to the moment the Smooth Sailors stepped onto the podium, you were part of this journey.

On behalf of Riley, her family, the Smooth Sailors and everyone at I-Innovate, thank you for believing in young South African innovators and helping make this unforgettable experience possible.

With sincere gratitude,

The I-Innovate Team
